Listen now (58 mins) | This week, Inez and I begin on the OceanGate tragedy, and the reaction to it. We have similar intuitions about the story, which is that society progresses through risk taking and pushing the frontiers of science and technology, and that often involves doing things that are risky and dangerous. One can’t both want a more dynamic civilization and then demand government regulation every time something goes wrong.
The extract was from outstanding Glenn Greenwald recent 90 minute episode that GG team made and placed on TikTok/YouTube as a promotion for GG brilliant and so needed news alternative.
I grew up in Bay area like Inez and I have to dispute her understanding of 9-11. I was in high school (Palo Alto High School) when it happened and our school was united in shock and the next day almost every student was dressed in patriotic gear, may be flag t-shirt, or a lapel pin or simply had an American flag attached to their bag. The Palo Alto council passed resolutions to create memorial parks and markers to commemorate 9-11. Here is one such news article reporting on it. Maybe Inez's hate for Palo Alto has created alternate reality of 9-11 era events in Palo Alto.
I was in middle school and not in Paly yet on 9/11 but I guess we just remember things differently. As backup, you can find at the end of this list of old Weekly Letters to the Editor one from my dad at the time, listing some of the common views published in the paper that I felt were pretty common in the town at the time. https://www.paloaltoonline.com/weekly/morgue/2001/2001_10_10.letters10.html
It's in this episode. It's pretty close to the beginning, you'll see what I mean. I didn't have a transcript, so he may not have used the word discrimination.

Gotta say, Richard, there's really something to the way you literally laughed at how whites never rise up and do something about the discrimination.
What.

His comment and laugh were exactly opposite of what you assumed. He was laughing at White people. You probably would like it.
