Are you going to do another mega-poll on what your audience thinks where they rate things from 1 to 5? Curious to see how it's changed since last time you did such a poll. How has it grown and with what demographics? Who has joined? Who has left? Maybe the pro-Putin pro-Taliban crowd.
Fun activity is also for you to try to guess the results beforehand and see how close you are.
Yeah, I think it would also be nice to have some yearly predictions too. For the mega-polls, Richard can put his guess of subscriber ratings, subscriber ratings, your rating.
You've written a lot about how free market economics, especially open labor markets, are empirically the best based on which countries have the highest living standards and migration patterns. How do you then explain the fact that so many people around the world (plus a lot of Americans) hate America's economic system? In surveys in many developing countries, people list countries with bigger welfare states and more gerontocracy like Canada and Germany as their ideal destination. While it's true Canadians and Europeans immigrate to America in larger numbers than Americans to Canada or Europe, that's because only a fairly small group of people leave developed countries. When it comes to developing countries, people's stated preference is to go to places with somewhat lower GDPs per capita in exchange for more of a social safety net. I tend to agree with you, but for libertarianism to succeed, the only country where it's somewhat applied (the USA) seems to be in need of wider acceptance as a model of how to organize a political unit
See Caplan's "Myth of the Rational Voter". People pay no cost for irrational political beliefs that only translate into Voice rather than Exit. People still immigrate to the US, the big difference between us and Canada now is that Canada has been trying to take in a lot more immigrants.
I give Canada as just one example. When people are asked which country they'd choose to live in if they had to leave their own, only a handful of countries in Europe answered plurality America. On top of that, people migrate from east to west within the EU because they see western Europe as having the full package: jobs, higher standard of living, more solvent welfare state
Pro-market policies are generally much more unpopular than they should be. Hence the Thiel quip about democracy and freedom, and hence the Caplan talking point that diversity hampers social safety nets and Rothbard's alliance with segregationists who opposed a safety net because it would give money to black people.
Look at the awful comments on this NYT article criticizing the idea of prediction markets. Maybe you need an NYT subscription to see this. They are really negative comments.
As an open-minded and ideologically flexible thinker, you nevertheless have a steadfast commitment to free-market principles.
Given that you are clearly not intellectually afraid of ‘picking and choosing’ on the basis of truth and not ideology, is there anything you think anti-market thinkers, on the left or the right, are correct about?
On that, if you had to choose, who’s your favourite Marxist?
On the topic of migration and labor, you cited Singapore and Dubai as models. Given that the UAE and Singapore tend not to have immigration (meaning naturalizing foreigners as citizens) but instead just grant residency to expats, do you think other countries should favor this model over those of places that absorb high numbers of immigrants as citizens (such as Canada or Britain)? Do you think America should allow open borders for labor but not grant citizenship given that many would favor socialism?
It’s a great idea in principle. But impossible without touching the 14th Amendment, which doesn’t even have an exception for US-born children of illegal immigrants. Honestly it seems like the right-wing version of having an Australia-style gun buyback program. Good idea in principle, bad idea in practice.
What are the odds University of Austin Texas and the Peterson Academy succeed at achieving their respective mission statements, i.e., to challenge and replace our traditional educational institutions?
You are very hostile to Trump/MAGA movement. I realize you are a fan of an educated voter bloc. However, when looking a policy alone, I feel like Trump is closer to a libertarian view than any of his competitors. (Still far, but closer). He seems open to almost anything, making him untenable for old school conservatives. Is it the Trump voter or the Trump policies you hate so much?
Dear Mr. Hanania, Thank you for asking this question. I am deaf, and I am 12. I like to read what you write but I can’t use a podcast because I can’t hear. Can you please write your answers. I have a question for you too. If I want to help animals, and I want to be a veterinarian, what can I do right now to learn more. I think you’re really smart and I think a lot about what you write about so I thought you would be a good adult to ask. Thanks, Taylor
Thanks for your question. I never imagined I'd have a fan that young, so nice to hear from you. I wouldn't know anything about being a veterinarian, I assume that you have to know biology and chemistry, but you're better off asking someone has experience in the field. I'll say as a general matter I'm a big fan of people finishing school, getting married, and doing "adult things" early, because kids don't realize how short life is. So whatever you do, do it fast!
Lots of women like animals and want such jobs, so they drive down the pay of a profession requiring an advanced degree. However, if you are a male that imbalance will help you get into veterinary school, as there is effectively affirmative action for males there. I personally scoff at EAs who focus on animal welfare, but if you want to help animals you might want to check out what effective altruists have studied there.
How do you organize your blogging pipeline? Which software do you use to plan the posts? Where do you write them, from within Substack or on some other software?
Also it would be good if Substack could officially implement some kind of ask fm or CuriousCat functionality for submitting questions.
My question is: Do we have any good data on the impact of the preferential migration of more capable and more intelligent individuals on the left-behind communities? Military service provided a route out and introduction to the larger economy and society for over a century in the US. Britain has seen similar migration from more rural areas and northern cities for at least 2 centuries. And the passage of the civil rights laws in the 1960's allowed the more competent minorities to abandon their impacted areas several generations ago.
Statistically what are the personality differences between heterosexual, homosexual, and asexual/aromantic women? What about for men?
(Asking because most girls I've ever been romantically interested in turned out to be lesbian or asexual/aromantic, on just large enough of a sample size that I highly doubt it's a coincidence, and I want to understand why. But I hope my question is of independent interest to a general audience.)
Lol I’m the same way but I always assumed it was just because there’s a natural gradient in sex-specific traits and I might have mild bisexual tendencies or something.
Yeah, I'm sexually attracted to women but afaict not psychologically attracted to stereotypically feminine personality traits. My friend thinks the relevant factors are that compared to heterosexual women, non-heterosexual women are more relaxed around men (including me) and have a more androgynous fashion sense, but I don't think that's a complete explanation.
Why did you decide not to practice law after obtaining your J.D. from a top school? I feel like in a different life, you would have made a good lawyer. If you could return to your twenties, would you still go to law school?
The polls is funny. Hanania subscribers read, normie conservatives listen to audio transcripts. I voted for the transcript though. I like hearing your voice.
Much has been made of how the MAGA faction within the GOP has stymied Ukraine aid. But how do you assess the Biden admin’s performance to date? Did he make a huge political miscalculation by not anticipating the opposition from the MAGA wing and only dribbling out aid instead of acting with more urgency? Is there a gap between rhetoric and practice on Ukraine aid similar to the gap in rhetoric and practice on many other issues important to Democrats?

Honestly should just rip off the ACX yearly poll thing wholesale.

There's also the Elon Musk rant about how politicians do evil while looking good whereas businessmen do good while looking evil.

For your "Bullying Grandma" theory, why was is a "Bullying Grandma" instead of "Bullying Grandpa"?
I'd prefer it if he explained his reasoning and evidence for the claim that she takes Trump "both literally and seriously."
Why are you not more for massive legal imigration and more controlled illegal one ?
It's the other way around now, and it's a possibly losing strategy if Trump is elected.
